Naming of Indonesian Warship "KRL Usman Harun" reflects insensitivity

Today i will be talking about the the naming of the Indonesian warship and how it emphasizes on the need to be sensitive to issues that may offend others.

On the 4th of February 2014, an Indonesian newspaper, KOMPAS, said that the "KRI Usman Harun" will be the last of three frigates to be delivered to the Indonesian navy.It is named after the two Indonesian marines -- Osman Hj Mohd Ali and Harun Said-- who were charged an hanged in Singapore for the bombing of the Macdonald House in 1963 as part of the Indonesian Confrontation against Malaysia. The bomb killed three people and injured 33 others. However the situation was closed when then Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, visited and scattered flowers over the graves of the two man.Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister K. Shanmugan spoke to his Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa to register Singapore's concerns over the naming of the navy ship and the impact this would have on Singaporeans especially the families of the victims. The Indonesian Foreign Afffairs Minister Marty Natalegawa have assured Singapore that no ill will was intended in the naming of the warships.

This issue have shown how insensitivity could cause unpleasant situations to arise. For example, in the case of the naming of the warships, although the relation between Indonesia and Singapore is very close, one must constantly nurture that relationship and show there is no unintended complications that may arise from either side.

The Republic of Singapore Navy(RSN) have declined any passage exercises with the "KRI Usman Harun" and have made it clear that the ship is not welcomed within its naval bases.
